Lead the Way in Parent and Family Engagement with ReadyRosie
Schools have good intentions about involving parents and families, but because educators were likely never trained on how to effectively do so, schools often resort to offering random acts of parent involvement – formulaic family events school have been doing for the last 50 years that make little impact. When schools engage in more effective practices, good intentions become high-quality family engagement that reinforces what students are learning in the classroom. Because teacher buy-in is significantly associated with increased parent and family engagement, learn how to lead the way in parent and family engagement using ReadyRosie, an online resource provided to all Title I-funded campuses in Denton ISD. Learn how to use this tech tool to engage parents and families while supporting classroom learning objectives.
*If new to a Denton ISD campus that receives Title I, this is a terrific opportunity for you!

Objectives:
At the end of this session the participant will be able to:
  • Be motivated and prepared to lead parent and family engagement efforts.
  • Understand the importance of parent and family engagement as well as ways to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way.
Walk away with ideas for immediate implementation.

Break Language and Communication Barriers with Microsoft Translator
Schools are increasingly diverse. Teachers manage many types of learners, including students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) who require assistive technology, and language learners who may not speak or understand the language of the classroom well. A diverse student body includes family members too, who may not share a language with teachers or school staff, making school enrollment, teacher-parent conferences , and conversations with school staff a challenge. Microsoft Translator helps bridge these communication gaps, supporting accessible classroom learning with live captioning, cross-language understanding, and even multilingual casual conversations to help with student integration.

Strategies for Improving Access to Digital Learning
Does access to digital learning resources affect the usage of those resources by your students and teachers? The need for secure, equitable access to digital learning both inside and outside of the classroom has evolved from a thankless task for technology teams to a mission-critical need for education leaders. We’ll discuss:
Why districts are moving towards next-gen platforms
How individualized access leads to organizational improvements
How utilization analytics is informing strategic level decisions

Most importantly, we discuss the technology-driven means by which teachers and students can and should have better access to their digital learning resources. Please come with your own ideas and be ready to take away ideas from your colleagues.

Sketchbook (by Autodesk) is a free app for desktop and mobile devices that is intuitive and easy to learn. If you are new to graphic design and completely intimidated by Photoshop, take a look at this app. Learn from a veteran High School Art Teacher who resisted technology as long as he could, and is now thoroughly hooked on it. Considering the A in STEAM is for Art, students who learn to add cool graphic designs to their projects (in any class!) will have used a more whole brain approach that taps into the Creative, Innovative part of their brain. This stuff is awesome! Please know this is a BYOD workshop and if you want, you can go ahead and get Sketchbook on your device of choice. The Office- North Ridge Edition
I use student elected leadership partnered with Canvas so that students can direct their own learning. Students run “Business Meeting Mondays” where they create their own essential questions for the TEKS in our class, and create projects that fit their interests. I have created the necessary guidelines for the projects and they invent the project they want to complete. Each six weeks is a different realm of the business world. First six weeks we cover “advertising,” second six weeks we cover “finances” and third six weeks we discuss “entrepreneurship” and how to prepare for the job hiring process.

Having School Announcement Hangups? Try Hangouts!
Our campus had live announcements for years, but technical difficulties, absences, and other unforeseen problems were causing daily issues. We wanted amazing announcements, but don't have a video studio or fancy equipment. Jefferson Elementary students are now using Chromebooks, Google Hangouts and YouTube Creator Studio to pre-record daily announcements! This has revolutionized announcements for our campus this year, allowing teachers to access information at THEIR classroom's convenience, and refer back to them again as needed for clarification. Come find out how to implement this on your campus!

Navigating the Rough Seas of PBL
National Winner: PBL Works District Representatives Karla and Erica teach you how to navigate the rough seas of PBL! Lost in a sea of Project Based everything? Treading water wondering how to make it work FOR you instead of AGAINST you? This session merges traditional teaching practices with how to create a successful gold-standard PBL. Half of the session focuses on how to extend your ELT or TEKS into a PBL where...get this...the KIDS work harder than YOU! The other half focuses on reflection, tuning protocols (looking at YOU, FlipGrid), and giving feedback that students want. We'll show you how to have your students critique each other, create their own rubrics, and guide their own groups so that YOU can be a facilitator to all this real-world (read: doesn't go into the trash can at the end of the unit) learning!
